Everyone knows that when youre at work and no one is paying attention to exactly what you eat, it can be difficult to resist temptation. Ive had days when I wasnt dieting that I would easily consume an additional 1000 calories in various types of candies, cakes, cookies and breads just because they were available in the office. The most frequent temptations in my current office tend to be breakfast goodies like bagels, muffins and donuts. But there are certainly times when someone has a milestone birthday and everyone gathers for singing & cake or a meeting had leftover food that gets put up for grabs in the kitchen, even Halloween candy gets brought in when people have leftovers (Im even guilty of that).
But how do you resist all of these incredible foods in an environment that lends itself to secrecy? Well, I have a secret of my own for resisting temptation. For example, this morning in my office there is an incredible looking chocolate chip bread on the kitchen counter accompanied by half a stick of butter that someone thoughtfully brought in to share with us all. The moment I saw it, curiosity set in. So I let myself walk up to the bread and then I took a deep breath, inhaling the rich aromas of chocolate and sugary loaf. That scent was enough to let me know exactly how that bread would taste, satisfying my curiosity and allowing me to walk away without even the slightest slice or nibble. Whats the trick to this willpower? I envision that the smell is coming from a Yankee Candle. Yup! I said it, candle.
Like a lot of people I know, I burn Yankee Candles in my house that sometimes smell like food. By imagining that the scent of that bread was coming from a candle, I was able to put the beauty of that aroma into perspective and just savor it as a scent instead of needing to taste it. After all, you wouldnt taste the hot wax inside your candles just because they smell good. So imagining that these office goodies are made of inedible scented wax may seem a little strange but it works for me. Kind of like, you wouldnt try to eat a plastic grape out of someones decorative fruit bowl just because it looked realistic.
So... to me, the office goodies are inedible but still enjoyable in some way and it makes me feel satisfied to know that I was able to enjoy that bread along with everyone else, even if it not in the same way.
