Day 2 on the Fast Metabolism Diet 4 30 13

I was very interested in seeing the number on the scale this morning - I know, I know, its only been 1 day!  But, with all the food I ate yesterday and how full I felt, I thought FOR SURE I would be at the same weight or have gained a pound.  But magically, Im down 2 lbs and my husband is down 4 lbs!  Again, I know its just been a day, but checking the scale every morning is helping to motivate me to keep going and a daily reminder that I can do this!

Some key items that I also want to mention are the water intake and energy levels.  I am particularly interested in having increased energy on this diet plan.  I feel that for many years, I am always tired and often take naps on the weekend or in the evening.  Im hoping that with the clean eating, I will see some improvements.

Water: You must drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces. Not as big of a deal for me since its only 80 oz, but the hubby is adjusting to drinking 130 oz of water a day.

Energy: Im not seeing a drastic improvement in my energy yet.  I can say that I didnt yawn a million times on the way into work today but I dont feel like I can jump up and go run a 1/2 marathon.  I plan to monitor this throughout the 28 days and will keep you posted.

Morning Weigh In:
Kiana: 161.0 lbs
Tone: 257.0 lbs

Menu:
Breakfast @ 7am:
Oatmeal with blueberries

Snack @ 10:30am:
Apple

Lunch @ 1:30pm:
Chicken and Broccoli Rice Bowl - leftovers

Pineapple

Snack @ 3:45pm:
Apple

Dinner @ 7:15pm:
Chicken and Broccoli Rice Bowl - leftovers

Notes on Food:

Oatmeal with blueberries - It was actually pretty good and I sprinkled some Stevia on it as well. I normally eat oatmeal with a TON of brown sugar and raisins, so this is a big change, but one that I can easily adapt to.
All other foods were either leftovers or fruit, so nothing else to add. I still felt full throughout the day, which makes it difficult to eat the snacks.

Preparation:
Im definitely a newbie on buying vegetables and planning accordingly for the menu items.  I realized at 7:30pm that I needed to make soup for tomorrows lunch and that I didnt have enough veggies for it.  So, I ran to the store and started the soup around 9:30pm (after dance).  Not the best planning in the world since the soup needed to simmer for an hour than cool down to de-bone the chicken.  After I turned off the stove, I went to bed and woke up a couple of hours later (1:30am) to de-bone the chicken and got everything ready for lunches.  If this soup is any good, Ill be sure to plan my Tuesday nights a little better!

Workout:
None (only because of the crazy Tuesday dance schedule)

Day 4 on the Fast Metabolism Diet 5 2 13

Im getting the hang of this diet as the days go on.  I do feel better today about having leftover steak and beef jerky for snacks.  Im also making mental notes on what meals were a success and which meals Ill need to swap out next week.  Which reminds me, I need to update my spreadsheet!

The scale was down, but not as much as each of the first two days - I blame this on the heavy protein intake and the weight lifting.  Either way, Ive lost more in the last 3 days than I have any other week on previous "diets".  Lets hope this continues through the weekend!

Morning Weigh In:
Kiana: 158.4
Anthony: 254.2

Menu:

Breakfast @ 6:30am:
Egg whites with garlic, onions and spinach, scrambled.

Snack @ 9:30am:
Leftover steak and celery

Lunch @ 12:30pm:

Chicken and vegetable soup

Snack @ 3:30pm:
Beef jerky

Dinner @ 6:30pm:

Steak and green beans

Workout:
P90X Legs and Back DVD - switched up the back exercises (since I did those yesterday) and did biceps and triceps during that time instead.

Preparation
I enlisted my husband to help me with cutting up all of the carrots, celery and cauliflower that we had and put them into containers so that they are ready to go for the next few days. I also put raw almonds, cashews, and sunflower seeds (healthy fats for phase 3!) in baggies so that those are ready to go as well.

10 Questions You Need to Answer Before Going on a Diet

1. What is your goal? Many diets fail because the target is uncertain. If you are not sure what your ideal weight should be, you will never be satisfied with the results, as you can always lose "just a few pounds more".

2. When has the problem started? It is possible that you started to overeat in response to an emotional trauma or a significant life event. If so, careful examination of the situation will help you deal with the real reason behind your overeating.

3. What is your "dieting history"? If you already have an experience of a failed diet, try to describe it in great detail. If you will be able to spot when and why do you normally get stuck, you will avoid similar problems in the future.

4. In what situations do you normally overeat? Perhaps, you reach out for chocolate when you are stressed or start eating more when you feel tired? In that case, you need a rest or an emotional support, not an extra slice of pizza.

5. Where do you overeat? Do you snack at work or are you hiding crisps in the car and eat them when no one is watching? Knowing your eating patterns will help you avoid the "risky" situations.

6. What are you saying to yourself when you overeat? Quite possibly, you are feeling guilty or blaming yourself. Constant self-criticism will not help you lose weight, but might well push you into more "comfort eating".

7. Do you like yourself? Have a good look in the mirror and give a honest answer. Do you like yourself right now, not when you will be 10 kg lighter? In your quest for a perfect body you will need an ally and that ally is you!

8. What was the attitude towards thin/fat people in your family of origin? Perhaps you are just replicating old statements, mentally repeating that "In our family people are big" or believing that "thin people are unhealthy".

9. Could you describe a typical mealtime in your family of origin? Were you told to eat up everything on your plate even if you did not like the food? Perhaps in your mind you are still listening to your parents and feel obliged to finish your meal, rather than listen to your body.

10. And the last question - can you imagine yourself in the future, having achieved your target weight? Try to picture yourself: What are you wearing? How are you feeling? How are people reacting to the "new you"? If you feel uncomfortable doing this visualization, you might have a few psychological barriers to overcome before starting on a diet.

The easier and more pleasant the visualization will become, the more ready you will be to lose weight for good.

Mileage Monday 2 Days Late

Stats for the week of March 2nd - March 8th... I have not been feeling at all well lately. My ribs seriously feel like they could completely split apart with all the pressure that is going on in my belly. I have been dealing with a burning/achy/throbbing sensation for probably the last three days and I have been having trouble breathing. **That is why I have been delayed in blogging lately... I just havent felt up to par to do it** I know its just the baby taking up room in my body, but it has definitely not been fun. I talked to my cousin about it since she just had a baby and is littler than I am and she said she had this same thing happen to her and that her doctor told her it is the baby slowly collapsing her lungs. Lovely. I asked what I could do to help. Her response was... "Wait until it comes out." Oh my! I dont want to be a complainer and know that I just need to suck it up, but most nights when I get home I just put on my PJs and head straight to bed so I can just sleep through it. Sigh....

In other news, the weather is starting to get warmer and my legs are itching to get outside and run!! I have seen so many people around my neighborhood hitting the pavement and all I can do is wish I was one of them. Personally, I will probably wait until after I have the baby to start running again. For me, it is just too uncomfortable on my body right now which makes it not enjoyable. I am terribly excited though to start taking long walks outside with Remington again... even though almost everyday includes a lot of walk for me!!

FINAL RESULTS!!

Okay, so yesterday was supposed to be the last day (Day 7) of the Mainly Protein Shake Only Diet....well Im still going to count it even though it was Valentines Day and my wife brought home a small cookie cake and a bottle of wine which I ended up eating over half the entire cookie cake, 2 snack size bag of chips along with half the bottle of wine.  I also cooked us a New York Strip steak and trimmed the fat..but at least I didnt make a side.  Anyways, Im going to do the diet today just to compensate for me getting off track at dinner, but since this mornings weigh in supposed to be the last, Ill let it be.  (but I think I may do this diet a few days a week or maybe one full week a month...especially if I slip up in my cutting fat phases)....I dont think the cookie and stuff from last night has had time to really turn into fat and register as that on the scale yet based on the stats this morning (Im sure it will show up in the next day or two)...but here they are:

Weight: 185.4
Fat lbs:  40.9
Fat %:    22.1%

So OVERALL I think this is a great 1 week diet!!  I felt a little hungry here and there...and I did eat all those carbs at the end (i.e. the cookie cake), but if I can just NOT GAIN WEIGHT...or heck, even lose more weight later on I think the 7 official days results were good b/c thats:

Total Weight Loss:  8.1 lbs
Total Fat lbs Loss:   5.3 lbs
Fat% Loss:               1.8%

(4.2% of overall body weight loss IN ONE WEEK! - heck, you dont see that on The Biggest Loser sometimes in a week on morbid obese people!...so Im pretty proud of these results!)

Calories in a banana

The calories in a raw banana according to the banana’s size are roughly as follows:

Banana SizeCaloriesFat Carbohydrate Protein
Extra Small (less than 6“ long) 81g 72 0.27g 18.5g 0.88g
Small (6” to 6-7/8” long) 101g 90 0.33g 23.1g 1.1g
Medium (7” to 7-7/8” long) 118g 105 0.39g 27g 1.29g
Large (8” to 8-7/8” long) 136g 121 0.45g 31.1g 1.48g
Extra Large (9” or longer) 152g 135 0.5g 34.7g 1.66g

Dieting Points About Bananas
The calories in a banana are not excessive given typical daily calorie requirements and the satisfying nature of the fruit. As can be seen in the above chart however, bananas are high in carbohydrates which may lead some people on low-carb diets to avoid the fruit.

Nutritional Benefits of Bananas
Bananas are often considered to be good sources of potassium, manganese, vitamin C and vitamin B6 and are high in dietary fibre.

A Few Notes About Calorie Counting
The heart of calorie counting comes down to understanding how many calories you consume and how many calories you burn. If you consume 3500 calories less than you burn, this should result in approximately 1lb of weight loss. In order to lose weight, you should aim for a basic calorie deficit so as to achieve 1 to 2 lbs of weight loss a week, rather than introducing too severe a calorie deficit. A severe calorie deficit may result in the loss of lean body mass, causing your system to lower the number of calories it burns to maintain itself.
Understanding and monitoring the calories you are consuming and burning is essential for a calorie counting process.

Week 2 Weigh in Results!

This morning at 7:15 I had an appointment to weigh-in at the Medi-Weightloss Clinic after week 2.  The results werent staggering but they were certainly satisfying.  I am down an additional 2.8 lbs, for a total loss of 13.5 lbs!!  If I lost 2 lbs/week from here on out, Id be a happy girl.  113.5 lbs to go and at about 2 lbs/week it would take me until April 1st, 2013 to reach my goal weight.  Not too bad overall and just in time for bathing suit season next year!  Id call that good timing.

With any luck and a lot of hard work I can definitely picture myself there next Spring.  I feel like Ive already made a positive choice for myself by taking charge of my health and attempting to end my dependence on food for comfort.  Now all I need to do is follow through with that choice until I reach my goal weight.  Ive followed through and met my goals many times with tasks that were much less fulfilling at work or school but this ones for me and its been the most difficult goal to achieve throughout my life.  This year, I have a good feeling Ill conquer it once & for all with this program, the support I have around me from friends and family, and by making myself feel accountable to anyone who reads this blog.  Sometimes the most difficult part of dieting is having the will power to hold yourself accountable for your bad choices.

Wii Zumba Fitness 2 An AMAZING Omelet

Day 10 & a beautiful, cold, clear Sunday here in Rhode Island.  The perfect morning for a living room workout!  So I decided to check out my new Wii Zumba Fitness 2 game.

After spending 15 minutes loosely moving in the same directions as the on-screen characters (I refuse to refer to them as instructors), I found myself nearly asthmatic and dripping with sweat.  Must have been a hell of a workout, right?  Wrong.  I spent at least 10 minutes of that time learning the steps in a tutorial... well, sort of a tutorial - more like a sing-a-long for dancers.  The tutorial was sorely lacking any narrative as to what movements my body was supposed to actually be making vs. whatever movements I happened to be able to mimic by watching a blurry, baggy pants wearing graphic.

So Im sure that Im missing some of the nuances as to how my upper body is supposed to be moving in conjunction with my lower body because I had no idea whether that was part of the workout or just that characters style.  I felt totally lost.  Then I tried an actual song!  I got 2 stars and was on my way to a 3rd when I had to stop the "low intensity - warm up" title because I was having trouble breathing, started crashing into furniture and didnt recognize any of the steps from the tutorial I had just watched.

Needless to say, I need a little time to work up to doing Zumba.  Ill probably try to do some Wii Fit Plus games instead this week and maybe revisit Zumba next weekend after Ive built up some endurance and practiced that tutorial A LOT more.

This morning I also felt inspired to cook something fun for breakfast.  Most weekday mornings Im lucky if I have 15 minutes to dedicate to preparing AND eating breakfast but the weekends are a great time for trying recipes and really cooking something you can look forward to eating.  Todays resulting omelet was a perfect example, check out my recipe (only 155 calories!):

1 whole large egg
3 Tbsp egg whites
2 slices Butterball Fully Cooked Turkey Bacon, microwaved & crumbled
1 Tbsp fresh chopped green onion
1 Tbsp Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Butter Flavor Pam

Heat a small frying pan over low-med heat and spray with Pam.  In a small bowl, scramble egg & egg whites together until smooth.  Put bacon & onion in bottom of pan, add eggs, sprinkle with cheese and let set.  Flip as needed so it does not brown.

Very satisfied with my breakfast this morning & happy that I tried some Zumba (even if it was a bit frustrating).  Looking forward to some Wii Fit Plus this week and adding raspberries to my chocolate protein shake one morning!

1 tsp Cumin Seeds
5-6 Curry leaves

1 tsp Coriander powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
2 medium onions, chopped coarsely
2 medium tomatoes (or 3-4 plum tomatoes), chopped

4) Add the tomatoes,  cumin powder, coriander powder and simmer for 4-5 minutes more, until the tomatoes are softened.
5) Add the mung beans,  and water and simmer for 10 minutes or so on medium/medium-high heat, stirring regularly, until the mung beans are done to your liking (we prefer them crunchy, but not too crunchy).
6) Garnish with cilantro and s
erve with rice/roti.

Note: I sometimes sprinkle pinch of Garam Masala once its done and cover with lid.
Preliminary for Sprouted Moung Beans: To sprout mung beans, rinse 1 cup of dried beans well, and then soak in 2-3 cups of water for 8-12 hours (the mung beans will be edible after an overnight soaking, and theyll expand to about triple their original size). Next, drain and rinse the beans, and let them stand for another 1-2 days under wet paper towels. The mung beans will quickly sprout and, more importantly, theyll have even more flavor. After 1-2 days, the beans should have sprouts of anywhere from half an inch to 1.5 inches in length.

Week 2 Recap of the Fast Metabolism Diet 5 13 13

Week 2 is OVER and we are at the halfway point - YEAH!!!  There were just as many challenges this week as last.  I think the major one is still the cravings.  Another big challenge is not being able to eat foods on certain days of the week - sometimes I just want to have an apple or cauliflower on whatever day I want.  Although, I can say that we both agree that we are wanting to eat these new recipes and this way of clean eating when the 28 days are over, just as long as we get a cheat meal once a week!

Week 2 Weight Loss:
Kiana: 1.6 lbs, for a total weight loss of 10.0 lbs or 6.1%
Anthony: 5 lbs, for a total weight loss of 15.8 lbs or 6.1%

So this weeks weight loss was extremely slow for my husband and almost non-existent for me.  It was a frustrating week, but I didnt cave.  This still feels like the Biggest Loser (without the extreme workouts) - and, yes I am a big fan of the show!  In almost every season that I can remember, the second week is the worst for the contestants as far as weight loss goes.  I really wish we could increase the workouts but Im going to follow the plan and see where we get.  So far, weve lost a collective 25.8 lbs in 2 weeks!  Truly amazing work when you put your mind to it.  Im so thankful that I have my husband to lean on during this experience - were doing this together and that has made the biggest impact!
