Hoodia

Day 32 and my first day without using Medi-Weightloss Clinics herbal appetite suppressant "Stay Slim".  So far so good on not feeling unusually hungry.

On my first visit to the Medi-Weightloss Clinic, a nurse reviewed my health history and determined that I would be a better candidate for herbal appetite suppressants than for the prescribed variety.  I agreed with this and purchased a bottle of their brand called "Stay Slim".

After about 2 weeks on the program, I began to wonder if I really needed an appetite suppressant.  I wasnt feeling unusually hungry (most days) and didnt notice much of a change in my appetite while taking Stay Slim so I did some research.

It turns out that Stay Slim is a product primarily made up of the Hoodia plant.  Well, learning what was in my pills I decided to research the ingredients.  It turns out that Hoodia is actually listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which includes species that are not currently endangered but are at risk of becoming endangered if trade is not controlled.

That information alone (never mind the skepticism surrounding the effectiveness of Hoodia as an appetite suppressant) prompted me to discontinue using any Hoodia based products going forward.  Id rather use willpower to control my appetite than a plant that could become endangered if people continue to use it without regard for the existence of that species.

For those of you unfamiliar with my values, Im a big supporter of environmental conservation and renewable energy.  I frequently contact my local representatives to support legislature regarding clean air/water, renewable energy such as wind turbines, and the protection of my local natural resources (parks, waterways, etc).  So, supporting the use of a product that could potentially contribute to the degradation of a plant species is not exactly my style.

This is not to say that Medi-Weightloss is being negligent in their product development.  Theyre simply offering their patients a choice to use prescription drugs or herbal remedies, which is admirable considering the abundance of prescription medications in most of our lives; however, I do not feel like I could possibly continue to utilize this product with a clear conscience, knowing that I could be contributing to the endangerment of the Hoodia plant.

So from today forward my Stay Slim is gone and Im suppressing my own appetite the old fashioned way... with willpower, drinking more water, and the occasional temper tantrum.
